Timber trusses create spatial quality and a better working environment

DSV’s logistics centre in Helsinki is another project in the series of logistics facilities developed in collaboration between DSV and Norrplan. The project comprises a 58,000 m² logistics centre and a 4,700 m² administration building, and when completed in 2018 it will accommodate around 500 employees. The facility is planned with a focus on efficient logistics flows, flexible warehousing solutions, and a clear functional separation between warehouse, terminal, and office areas.

The architecture is based on a standardised design concept developed for DSV’s administration buildings, cross-dock terminals, and warehouse facilities. The concept is built around modular principles and well-tested layouts that ensure efficient operations and make it possible to repeat and adapt solutions across projects. Through the longstanding collaboration since 2002, a design template has been developed that combines functionality, cost-efficiency, and a consistent architectural identity in DSV’s logistics facilities.

Architecturally, the facilities are often characterised by a simple, industrial aesthetic. The façades work with repeated rhythms and graphic elements – including the characteristic “pyjama-striped” façades – while the administration building typically appears as a more distinct volume, often with a dark or black façade that gives the facility a strong identity.

In the Helsinki project, a structural system of large solid-timber trusses has also been incorporated. The timber trusses add a warm and tactile quality to the space and create a visual contrast to the otherwise raw industrial building. At the same time, the use of wood contributes to a better working environment; recent research indicates that workplaces featuring visible wooden materials can have a positive effect on employee well-being and potentially reduce sick leave.
