Designing Logistics Centres with Nature in Mind

Designing Logistics Centres with Nature in Mind

At Norrplan, we believe industrial architecture should do more than solve operational needs — it should actively strengthen the local environment.

When a client’s ambition is to enhance the environmental profile of a project, our team of specialists translates those ambitions into buildable design solutions.

We work to integrate functional biodiversity into the site’s infrastructure. We design solutions that meet municipal requirements, support local ecosystems, and enhance daily well-being for employees.

Large industrial areas hold enormous, untapped potential.

With thoughtful landscape design and simple, well-planned interventions, undeveloped land can support rainwater management, improve biodiversity for plants, animals, and insects, and create more resilient, attractive areas for daily use.

Moving away from tightly mown “grass deserts” toward dynamic, nature-rich environments leaves a measurable positive impact on the surrounding landscape and strengthens local ecosystems.

Our recent design proposal for a logistics centre demonstrates how biodiversity and ecology can become core design drivers in large-scale industrial developments.

In this project, we shaped the entire concept around the landscape itself:

  • Naturally formed windbreaks, planted corridors, and rooftop greenery that support local biodiversity
  • Native vegetation and planting solutions that harmonise with the surrounding environment
  • Integrated rainwater management tailored to high groundwater levels, with delayed runoff guided through integrated channels and green areas
  • Solar panels and green roofs that enhance the building’s green profile

Architecturally, the concept combines robust materials such as red brick and steel panels to ensure that the building would blend naturally into the area. Carefully planned façades, windbreaks, and parking areas create a cohesive relationship between functionality and aesthetics.

At Norrplan, we specialise in designing industrial facilities where ecological sensitivity and operational efficiency go hand in hand. Our vision is to help create the green industrial areas of the future – places where nature, people, and industry thrive together.

Biodiversity is not a checkbox for us — it is a design principle.

If you are planning an industrial project and want to strengthen its environmental profile, we are always ready to share our expertise.
