Scandinavia’s most advanced fully automated high-bay warehouse
In 2008, Norrplan A/S was behind the development of Carlsberg’s new fully automated high-bay warehouse in Fredericia – a central element in the brewery’s modernisation and expansion of Danish production. The high-bay warehouse, standing 40 metres tall, holds up to 70,000 pallets and serves as the heart of one of Scandinavia’s most advanced brewing facilities.
The project formed part of Carlsberg’s strategic decision to consolidate production from Valby to Fredericia, creating the need for both technological and logistical breakthroughs. The transport of pallets, previously handled manually by forklifts, is now fully automated via 18 cranes controlled by an advanced IT system that communicates directly with the brewery’s other systems.
The high-bay warehouse is connected to the bottling plant via a 4.3‑kilometre suspended monorail with 272 trolleys in a purpose‑designed bridge structure, continuously transporting beer and water pallets throughout the brewery. This system ensures that peak production days can handle up to 10,000 pallets per day, supporting an annual production of approximately 1.4 billion bottles and cans.
Norrplan’s solution focused on combining functionality with robust architecture. The building incorporates complex logistics functions, picking systems, and integrated transport solutions.
