Development of a Visionary Proposal for a Future Logistics Hub
Building on more than 30 years of experience in developing warehouse and logistics facilities, Norrplan participated in the design competition for Odense Dry Port in Årslev, securing second place. The proposal is based on a deep understanding of logistics processes, efficient operations, and long-term flexibility, presenting a holistic master plan that achieves high land-use optimization combined with a rational and future-proof building structure.
The master plan is organized around a central roundabout, serving as the logistical and spatial focal point for the area’s seven building volumes. This layout ensures short internal transport distances, clear flow lines, and a distinct separation between heavy traffic, passenger cars, cyclists, and pedestrians. The compact building structure allows for phased development without compromising overall coherence and identity.
Architecturally, the proposal features seven large, striking building volumes that appear as a unified development rather than individual warehouses. The volumes are tied together by a consistent architectural concept, where the upper facade zones are finished in a bold ochre-red color inspired by the characteristic brick buildings of Odense Harbor. This color acts as an identity-defining element while creating a strong contrast to the surrounding green landscape.
The buildings are designed with a clear division between base and top: the robust base meets functional requirements for logistics and operations, while the lighter facade treatment above adds variation and rhythm. Subdivided gables and facade modulation break down the scale of the buildings, contributing to a more balanced expression within the landscape.
The plan incorporates options for both central headquarters functions and satellite offices directly connected to warehouse units, supporting efficient workflows.
Sustainability is integrated as a fundamental design parameter. Large roof and paved areas are dual-purposed for solar panels, rainwater management, and recreational spaces, while surface water is managed locally through swales, soakaways, and retention ponds. The landscape transitions from wild nature at the periphery to more refined arrival and recreational zones near the buildings, with a strong focus on biodiversity.
Overall, the proposal demonstrates how Norrplan’s specialized expertise in warehouse and logistics construction is combined with a clear architectural concept. Odense Dry Port is envisioned as an efficient, flexible, and identity-driven logistics hub that supports Odense Harbor’s strategic ambitions and meets future demands for modern logistics.
